Make Your E-Commerce Store Shine

Start Using These Expert Ecommerce SEO Strategies

Is your e-commerce store struggling to climb the search engine result pages? You’re not alone, actually it’s very simply, you’re the majority. A lot of online stores, only a few spots on the first page.

To stand out, you need to implement smart e-commerce SEO strategies that effectively optimize online store SEO.

Why the Wrong SEO Choices Are Killing Your Store

Wrong SEO choices lead to:

  • Low Organic Traffic: Reduced visibility directly minimizes your customer reach, impacting your store’s overall performance.

  • Decreasing Sales: Less traffic translates to fewer sales, negatively affecting your revenue.

  • Increased Costs: Relying heavily on paid ads to drive traffic can become financially burdensome.

  • Lost Opportunities: Even your best products may go unnoticed without a solid SEO strategy in place.

Use smart ecommerce SEO strategies to ensure your store doesn’t fall behind competitors.

Proven Strategies to Enhance Ecommerce Search Visibility

While there’s no shortcut to rapid SEO success, strategic improvements can optimize your ecommerce website performance and boost visibility:

1. Optimize Your Ecommerce Site Structure

  • Streamline your site navigation to improve user experience and facilitate efficient search engine indexing. Ensure that the path from the home page to checkout is clear and easy to follow, reducing bounce rates and improving organic visibility. In short: focus on getting from landing page to “payment successful” in as few clicks as possible. Another way to save a click (to the PDP in this case) this way is having “add to cart” buttons on your PLP.

2. Boost Ecommerce Page Load Speed

  • Use tools like Google PageSpeed Insights to identify bottlenecks to help optimize performance. Optimize images by compressing them without compromising (too much) quality. Enable caching to speed up page loading times. Additionally, consider using lazy loading to prioritize the loading of critical content.

  • Have a critical look at all the additional scripts you load on a page. Sometimes scripts that are needed for a specific page are loaded in a cross site container, unnecesarily impacting pages. One way to indentify the biggest culprits is by using the Lighthouse Treemap. Shopify did a good job in explaining how this works.

3. Craft an Effective Ecommerce Keyword Strategy

  • Utilize powerful tools like Semrush for thorough keyword research.

  • Focus on converting long-tail keywords, which are more specific and less competitive, thereby enhancing your product page SEO. For example, instead of targeting “running shoes,” aim for “best running shoes for trail running”.

4. Enhance Mobile Ecommerce SEO

  • Design a mobile-friendly site, as mobile commerce continues to rise. Ensure your site is mobile 1st, responsive and provides a seamless user experience across all devices. Google’s AMP format can help to optimize mobile experiences by reducing load times and thereby improving mobile search rankings.

5. Ecommerce Content Optimization Techniques

  • Regularly update your product descriptions with natural keyword usage to enhance visibility. Avoid using manufacturer descriptions (after all, this is not unique content when all e-com platforms use the same descriptions); instead, create unique and engaging content that includes relevant keywords. This approach not only improves SEO but also helps in persuading customers to make a purchase.

6. Use Structured Data for Better Search Results

  • Implement product schema markup to provide search engines with detailed product information, such as price, availability, and review ratings. This can lead to enhanced search results, including rich snippets and knowledge graphs, which can attract more clicks and visitors.

7. Boost Ecommerce Site Conversions Through SEO

  • Write engaging meta descriptions that not only include your target keywords, but also have a CTA: “See more”, “Find out how”, etc. to improve click-through rates.

  • Optimize your content for site search by placing high-internal-search-volume keywords in H1, H2, and body copy. This helps in both keyword focus and product placement within search engine results pages.

8. Leverage Video Marketing

  • Incorporate video content into your SEO strategy. Videos can improve user behavior metrics like dwell time, which Google monitors (it seems). This can significantly boost your chances of ranking on the first page of Google and increase conversions by up to 86%.

  • If you already are creating video material for this, your next win is leveraging this on TikTok.

Customer reviews add a visual extra to make you stand out in results. Technically not SEO in this example, but just to illustrate a point.

9. Incentivize Customer Reviews and Engagement

  • Encourage customers to leave reviews (for instance by sending them an automated email asking them, after delivery took place), as they are crucial for building trust and improving search rankings. Good reviews can also enhance your site’s visibility in search results and attract more organic traffic.

10. Monitor and Adjust Your Strategy

  • Continuously monitor your SEO performance using tools like Google Analytics and Google Search Console. Adjust your strategy based on the data to ensure you are always optimizing for the best results.

Implementing these strategies can lead to a substantial increase in organic visibility, improve your online store ranking, and thereby attracting more (targeted) traffic and increasing conversions.

The Importance of Understanding Search Intent

It’s crucial to understand the search intent behind your target keywords. Search intent represents the theoretical information the searcher wishes to obtain or the objective the searcher wants to accomplish.

For example, if someone searches for “best running shoes”, they are likely looking for a buying guide or product reviews.

If they would be searching for “best running shoes deal”, it’s a different story, they’re looking for a sale, discount, end of season moment.

Ensuring your content aligns with this intent can significantly improve your search engine rankings.

AI, Yes or No?

One of the most currently debated topics in e-commerce SEO is AI in content creation. While some argue that AI-generated content lacks the personal touch and creativity of human writers, others see it as a game-changer for efficiency and scalability. After all you’re also not telling me a human copywriter is still gonna be creative when writing 10.000 different running shoe descriptions.

Where do you stand on this issue? Do you believe AI has a place in e-commerce content creation, or should it be left to human writers? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
