Podcast Starter Guide

Tips for Planning, Recording, and Launching

Imagine having a passion, a story, or an idea that you simply can’t keep to yourself, nor shut up about. Now, imagine reaching a wide audience to share it. Are you asking yourself, “Should I, and how can I start a podcast?”

If the thought crossed your mind, but you’re hesitant due to not knowing where to start or fearing all the technical stuff, you’re not alone. Perhaps this can help out.

My story with podcasts

I love the info or ideas that are sparked by listening to a podcast at times. I know a lot of others love podcasts, who would've known one of the most popular celebrities these days got their biggest succes from their podcast: Joe Rogan.

Back in my Beerwulf days we actually started a podcast by accident. A person on my team needed some help in figuring out their career path or actually how to bring some more fulfilment and joy to their daily work. So we started having chats on random ideas, media options that would be interesting to try out and fun to do. Plus I had a beer journalist on my team (I know, getting paid to drink beer, how awesome?) that I personally did not know how to fully utilize yet.

To top it off we had a basement that we could transform into a miniature studio. So we started sound proofing a bit, building concepts, looking at lengths and story build-up, etc.

That was a case of 1+1=3.

Overcoming Podcasting Fears

Podcasting can feel like putting yourself in a cage with a lion. Planning, recording, and launching might already seem like a lot. Let alone the scariest thing, putting your voice out there to be judged.

But simply put: If tons of people from Joe Rogan to the most non-value adding useless topic obsessed person, and countless others can launch and grow their podcasts, so can you. It’s a matter of having a clear plan, perseverance and understanding the steps in the podcast creation process.

The Cost of Hesitation

Being stuck is frustrating — it feeds your insecurity (it’s not just podcasters in the making who face analysis paralysis at this stage). If those podcast planning tips are gathering dust and your (probably too expensive to start with) microphone hasn’t been used, every day you delay is a missed chance to connect with potential fans or share your story. As podcasts grow in popularity, jumping in sooner rather than later is key.

Your Podcast Launch Plan

Turning your podcasting dreams into reality begins with a clear strategy:

  • Concept Crafting:

    • Define your target audience. What stories or value will entice them

    • Choose a show format: interviews, solo, or roundtable — pick what suits you best.

    • Set episode lengths: short for busy listeners or long for in-depth storytelling.

  • Podcast Equipment Recommendations:

    • Essentials include a quality microphone, headphones, and recording software. Budget-friendly (USB) mics are available (Røde makes some very good mics).

    • Pro-tip: Use something like Restream or Zencastr for helping to record, edit, optimize audio and push to social.

  • Recording Tips:

    • Record in a quiet location — your basement can be a perfect studio (we used a basement at Beerwulf).

    • Pro-tip: Bit of acoustic foam on ceiling, walls, under table, does some magic.

    • Fine-tune audio levels pre-recording to minimize editing.

  • Selecting the Best Podcast Hosting:

    • Consider platforms like Podbean or Anchor (tool from Spotify) for analytics and consistent uploads to maintain audience engagement.

  • Launch Your Podcast Successfully:

    • Check off a podcast launch checklist to ensure episode quality, descriptions, and marketing materials are ready.

    • Promote across social media and through guest blogging or interviews.

  • Strategies for Podcast Growth and Monetization:

    • Help your podcast marketing approach by putting some effort into SEO-friendly descriptions and tags.

    • Explore sponsorships, collabs, Patreon, or merchandise sales to monetize/spread your podcast.

    • Shift perspectives with the story lenses approach — what interests one listener may not interest another. Adapt accordingly to broaden your podcast’s appeal.

Start Your Podcasting Journey

Though the podcasting journey might seem scary, every step you take brings you closer to achieving your goals. There’s an audience eager for your unique voice, so take a deep breath, and begin narrating your story. The world is ready to listen.
